Every winter I’m troubled with the same old problems—dry skin and dry lips. I love me some good lip scrub, but to ensure soft lips, I have to use a good lip balm as well. I had actually never used a lip balm by Lush before, but since I’m pretty much enthousiast about 99% of their products, I knew this lip butter would be a hit too. I chose Crush, part of the Valentine’s Day range, because I saw that this lip balm wasn’t in a small jar like the other lip balms—which is super inconvenient when you have long nails. Bonus points for the orange in this lip balm!

What is it?

Lush Crush Lip Butter costs £6.00 / $9.00 / €7,00 (4g/1oz.) and is part of the Valentine’s Day range. Like I mentioned in the intro, this lip balm is shaped like a regular chapstick, not in a tiny jar. I found that applying a chap stick works so much better for me, I don’t like putting my long nails in a small jar, neither do I like the idea of getting my finger dirty. As far as I know, Crush is the only lip butter in a chap stick, but hopefully more will follow! I’ve found that using a chap stick has been a big part of my routine in the winter, if I don’t use any lip balm (and lip scrub!) my lips are dry and flaky.

What’s inside?

Ingredients: Organic Castor Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Glycerine, Sunflower Wax, Organic Shea Butter, Candelilla Wax, *Limonene, Brazilian Orange Oil, Grapefruit Oil, Orange Flower Absolute, Stevia, *Benzyl Cinnamate, *Cinnamal, *Cinnamyl Alcohol, *Citral, *Farnesol, Geraniol, *Linalool, Flavour, Colour 47005:1

This lip butter contains some seriously hydrating ingredients, starting with castor oil—known to be very moisturising and conditioning. Then we have jojoba oil (an ingredient I LOVE and use in its purest form), which is also hydrating. Glycerine is a carrier that locks in moisture, and sunflower wax is known to leave a glossy look. Shea butter isn’t a new ingredient for the most of you, this wonderful ingredient is incredibly moisturising and softening. Candelilla wax provides a protective barrier on the skin, which is exactly what you want a lip balm to do. Lush added orange oil and grapefruit oil, both have antimicrobial properties, but also add taste and scent to the product.

Also, notice how this lip balm doesn’t contain any mineral oil, like many, MANY other lip balms. Mineral oil (in the ingredients list often referred to as mineral oil, paraffinum liquidum, petrolatum, synthetic wax, cera microcristallina and even more terms!) is occlusive, meaning it stops water and natural moisture evaporation from the skin by creating a coating. This means that the skin will dry out even more. (Which will cause you to put on even more lip balm, it’s a repeating cycle) It’s best to find yourself a lip balm that does not include this ingredient, like the one from this blog post. 😉

Scent

I think can you already guess the scent, right? Orange and grapefruit—very fruity and zesty! It’s a bright, cheerful, happy and energetic scent. I’m in love with products that contain orange, the scent is such a mood boost for me. The scent of Crush is a bit more tangy because of the grapefruit, so don’t expect a 100% orange scent. Nonetheless, it’s a great scent (and taste!).

What do I think?

Applying this lip balm is very easy, the lip butter glides right across the lips, leaving just enough product. As you can see on the photo above, it adds shine to my lips as well. Overall the texture of the lip balm is excellent! Not too hard, not too soft. I’d say Lush really outdone their selves by creating this lip balm, and I really hope more will follow. The lip balm stays put for hours, even after drinking of eating some. Even when I apply the lip balm before going to sleep, I can still notice some lip balm on my lips when I wake up the next morning.

I found that after using this lip balm for a few days (and I’ve applied it about 2 times during the day, and before bedtime) my lips are wayyy more soft and hydrated. I like using it combined with a Lush lip scrub for incredibly soft lips. So if your lips are in desperate need of some moisture, Crush will do the job!
